Not when there’s no Camelot without you.

Can we talk about this scene (again) for a bit? I know a lot has been said about this already, but I just finished the series and I want to throw this in with the feels and I really need to get it out.
Ok, so in this scene, Arthur’s supposedly dead already, and Merlin just kept on crying and screaming, “Arthur! Arthur!” hoping Arthur would wake up, hoping that this isn’t the end.
Then Arthur opens his eyes, and Merlin HOPES. Hopes that they would still make it, thought they COULD make it, to save Arthur, his best friend, his king, his lover (if you don’t merthur feel free to skip this), his DESTINY. Arthur wasn’t dead, and Merlin whispers a relieved “Arthur”. Merlin begs, “stay with me”, and Merlin dares to SMILE, a smile full of hope and desperation. “I’d always thought you were the bravest man I’d ever met”, Arthur had said. Losing all hope but STILL daring to hope is one of the bravest things anyone can do.
But at that moment, with Merlin’s smile still in place, Arthur closes his eyes and properly dies. And it hurts so much because we have Merlin, who was at the brink of losing all hope but dared to hope again only to lose it, and we have Arthur, who I liked to think heard Merlin and opened his eyes, wanting to soothe Merlin, wanting a smiling Merlin to be the last thing he sees, not wanting to leave his other half but not being able to stay.
I called you many names
but at the end of everything
could choke out only one.
“You are magic itself. You cannot lose what you are. Believe what your heart knows to be true. That you always have been and that you always will be.”
